Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have made the decision to transition to a new role. The couple has faced a lot of opposition since their 2018 wedding. Despite continuous rumors from the press, this is the first time they’ve publicly stated their intention to step back from their role as senior members of the royal family.

In a letter posted to their website and to their Instagram account, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex explain that after “many months of reflection and internal discussions,” they decided to create a new role for themselves within the royal family. Though they still plan to “continue to fully support Her Majesty The Queen,” Prince Harry and Markle want to establish their own financial independence. They would be unable to do so in their current positions. Members of the royal family aren’t allowed to have a job outside their royal duties, so one purpose of this change is to allow them the freedom of honest work.

Now that they’re free to move as they please, travel is in the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s future. “We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages.” They credit the encouragement of the public with their decision to make such a massive change in their lives.

The duke and duchess’ son, Archie, is also a reason behind the transition. In their letter, the couple writes, “This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity.” Charitable ventures featured strongly in Princess Diana’s life as well — like mother like son.

Any reports from the tabloids before this announcement were a guess. Recently, Gossip Cop ran a story on all the times we’ve busted this rumor in the past. At the time, there was no evidence that showed this was being considered by the duke and duchess. A tweet by the BBC royal correspondent seems to suggest this decision didn't just take the public by surprise. According to the tweet, the palace is “disappointed” by this sudden announcement.

Reports — like one from the latest issue of Woman's Day claiming Prince Charles banished Prince Harry and Markle from the royal family — are still wildly untrue. Gossip Cop busted that rumor, pointing out that Prince Charles doesn't have the authority to banish any member of the royal family. That responsibility falls on the queen alone, and she certainly hasn't used it on her grandson. We wish Prince Harry and Meghan Markle all the best on their new journey.
