A tabloid claims Robert Downey Jr. and his wife Susan have are having marriage problems as a result of their upcoming movie, Dolittle. The story is completely untrue. Gossip Cop can debunk it.
Downey Jr. stars in the upcoming Doctor Dolittle remake, which he produced alongside his wife. The spouses have worked on a number of projects together through their production company, Team Downey. This latest film, according to OK!, might spell doom for their marriage.
Reports emerged earlier this year that Dolittle had a somewhat troubled production, which included several weeks of reshoots. A supposed source tells the magazine, "It's been one frustration after another, and it's put him in a terrible mood – and she's not much happier. They asked for scene reshoots, but that only made things worse because they have different opinions. They hired a director [Stephen Gaghan] who's also a friend, but Robert's the one who's bossing everyone around."
The alleged insider goes on to say that Downey Jr. is bringing his frustrations home with him, adding, "Susan's fed up. She told Robert he needs to put his family first and not be such a workaholic. They really do care for each other, but the stress over this project and Robert's behavior are causing a lot of tension."
The only accurate aspect of this story is that Dolittle underwent reshoots in early 2019. Director Jonathan Liebesman was brought in to help Gaghan shoot new scenes for the film. This occurred back in March of last year. Why would Downey Jr. and his wife suddenly be having marriage problems when their movie wrapped production almost a year ago? The real reason the tabloid came up with this story is because Dolittle is set to hit theaters later this month. The magazine just wants to capitalize on the upcoming release of the film. Even if the tabloid's report were true – which it isn't – it doesn't make sense for it to be written in the present tense.
Gossip Cop checked in with a source close to the couple, who tells us the outlet's article is nonsense. The spouses have been producing movies together for more than a decade. Susan was a producer on Iron Man 2 and the Sherlock Holmes franchise, in addition to many of her husband's other films. They have a close working relationship, in addition to a strong marriage. Their bond hasn't been broken by a movie just because the production didn't go so smoothly.
Meanwhile, Downey Jr. posted a loving birthday tribute to his wife on Instagram in November. The actor wrote, "Super buddy, mama bear, pillar of strength. First in class, last to jump ship, example to all. I offer myself to thee. HBD, Mrs Downey…" This message came well after the production of Dolittle.
The tabloids don't have much insight into the actor's career. Last year, Gossip Cop busted OK!’s sister publication, Star, for making up a phony story about Downey Jr. refusing to work with Reese Witherspoon. This latest article about the actor's work impacting his marriage is also baseless.
